Train collision disrupts service on Lalmonirhat–Burimari route for 3.5 hours

Train services on the Lalmonirhat–Burimari route resumed partially on Monday afternoon, three and a half hours after a head-on collision between two trains disrupted rail communication.

The accident took place near the Lalmonirhat railway station work shed due to a signal error. Officials said the Dhaka-bound Lalmoni Express had just arrived and was heading toward the work shed when the Parbatipur-bound Burimari Commuter Train entered the same line, leading to the collision.

No casualties were reported in the incident.

Train movement remained suspended until 5:30pm, when local trains were cleared to operate. Long-distance services are yet to resume.

Passengers, especially those on the commuter train, suffered delays and discomfort due to the disruption.

Railway security official Benazir Ahmed said recovery work started soon after the accident. “Thankfully, no one was injured. Safety measures are in place,” he said.

A four-member committee, led by Divisional Traffic Superintendent Abdullah Al Mamun, has been formed to investigate the incident.

Authorities said those responsible for the error will face action after the probe.
