Retd security officers to be appointed to control capital’s traffic: Jahangir

Home Advisor Lt. Gen. Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) today said that retired members of various law enforcement agencies will be appointed in controlling traffic in the capital.

“Currently, 700 students are working in traffic control in the Dhaka Metropolitan (DMP) areas. Similarly, formation of a community policing comprising retired police, army, air force, navy, BGB, and Ansar members who have been working in traffic control is under active consideration.  Initially, about 500 people may be appointed for this work. An age limit will also be set to this end,” he said.

He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after coming out of the 4th meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on Law and Order at the conference room of the Home ministry at Bangladesh Secretariat here this afternoon.

The advisor said that the issue of banning battery-run rickshaws is under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

“We are implementing the High Court order. The High Court is expected to issue the instructions to the Law Ministry on this issue. Once we receive the instructions, we will take necessary action accordingly,” he said.

The Home Adviser hoped that a good decision or instruction will come from the High Court on this issue.

According to that instruction, the ongoing problem with auto-rickshaws will be resolved, he clarified.

Replying to questions about harassment through fake and false cases, Jahangir said, “We are taking necessary legal measures to prevent fake and false cases.”

The advisor continued that they are forming a committee so that those who have been accused in such false cases do not suffer any kind of harassment.

“We have made a proposal for the committee, but it has not yet been finalized,” he said.

Jahangir said that the district-level committee will have the members on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police and    District Legal Aid Committee.

Along with the police, he said the committee will determine who is actually guilty and make sure that none is harassed.

The meeting discussed various issues; especially improvement of  the law and order situation across the country alongside maintaining law and order on the occasion of Biswa Ijtema and celebration  of the Victory Day .
