BNP on Thursday reaffirmed its full commitment to implementing the “July National Charter”, signed on October 17, and urged all political parties not to raise new issues or create crises that could hinder the upcoming election.

The party made its position clear on the ongoing political debate over the July Charter’s implementation after a virtual meeting of its National Standing Committee, held with Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman in the chair.

A press release signed by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the decisions made at the meeting.

It said that after long and detailed discussions in the National Consensus Commission, a national consensus was reached on several issues, including some with notes of dissent, which were signed in a historic ceremony at the South Plaza of the National Parliament on October 17.

“As a participant in that process, we embrace all the points stated in the Charter and remain committed to implementing them in accordance with the Constitution and the existing laws of the country,” the part said.

It said the party would uphold the strength of the democracy-loving people against all ill attempts to create new questions or crises over the implementation of the unanimously adopted July National Charter, reaffirming its respect for the boundless sacrifices of the martyrs and the injured in the long 16-year relentless struggle for the restoration of democracy and in the mass uprising of July–August 2024.

The BNP also said it firmly believes that all political parties will remain united in implementing the consensus reached through long discussions and, under no circumstances, will raise new questions or create crises that could obstruct the election to be held for the restoration of democracy.

“BNP calls upon the interim government to take sincere and effective measures for the lawful implementation of all the issues agreed upon in the July National Charter and to ensure that the national election is held on time,” it added.
