CA to decide on implementation of Consensus Commission’s recommendations, referendum: Asif Nazrul
Law Adviser Professor Dr Asif Nazrul today said that Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus will take the final decision regarding the implementation of the National Consensus Commission’s recommendations and referendum.
“Two proposals of the Consensus Commission were discussed in today’s meeting of the Council of Advisers,” he said replying to a question at a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy here after the Advisory Council meeting.
One of the two proposals is issuance of the July National Charter Implementation Order and then organizing a referendum — and if it (referendum results) is not implemented within 270 days (after formation of a new parliament), the constitution will automatically be amended, he said, adding, “We will see whether there is any such instance or is it possible anyhow.”
The other proposal is to leave the entire matter to the next elected parliament, he added.
“There is still sharp disagreement among political parties over which proposal to take. However, the final decision in this regard will be made by the Chief Adviser, and we will assist him,” the law adviser said.
Professor Asif Nazrul noted that despite 270 days of dialogue, political parties have failed to reach full consensus, creating a challenge for the government.
“Now we have to think about how to move forward,” he said, adding, if the political parties could reach a consensus like the uprising time, when their only target was to oust fascist government, it would ease the way for the government to move ahead smoothly.
Replying to another question, Professor Asif Nazrul reiterated that the next parliament elections must be held in February next year.
