Tenure of committee on engineers’ demands extended

The tenure of a committee formed to examine and recommend on the professional demands of engineers holding BSc and diploma degrees has been extended, according to a government notification.
The Cabinet Division issued the notification extending the committee’s tenure until November 30.
The eight-member committee, formed on August 27, is chaired by Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan, Adviser to the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources; Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges; and Ministry of Railways.
Along with four government advisers, the committee includes representatives from engineers’ organizations.
It was initially asked to submit a report to the government within one month, a period that has already expired.
Last August, students from engineering universities protested by blocking Shahbagh Mor, demanding three sets of professional rights.
They also attempted to surround the residence of the Chief Adviser, Jumuna.
Kazi Mohammad Mozammel Haque, Additional Secretary (Organization & Management) of the Ministry of Public Administration, serves as the committee’s member secretary.
Other committee members include Adilur Rahman Khan, Adviser to the Ministry of Industries and Ministry of Housing and Public Works; Professor Dr. Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, Adviser to the Ministry of Education; and Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Ministry of Water Resources.
From professional bodies, the committee includes Mohammad Rezaul Islam, President of the Institution of Engineers Bangladesh; Engineer Md. Kabir Hossain, President of the Institution of Diploma Engineers; and Professor Dr. Engineer Tanvir Manzur, Chairman of the Board of Accreditation for Engineering and Technical Education, Bangladesh.
The committee will examine the reasonableness of professional demands from BSc and diploma engineers and submit a report with recommendations.
Several meetings have already been held, and a working committee along with a subcommittee has been formed to assist in the process.
