27,637 new appointments made in law enforcement forces: Home Adviser

A total of 27,637 new appointments have been made across various law enforcement and security forces since the current government assumed office, said Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Monday.

He was speaking to reporters following a meeting of the Core Committee on Law and Order held at the Secretariat on Monday.

“You often say no recruitment is taking place in the law and order forces. I’m giving you the statistics — so far, 15,851 new appointments have been made in the police, none of which are from the cadre service,” the adviser said.

He further informed that 4,469 appointments have been made in the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), 5,551 in Ansar, 1,558 in the Prisons Directorate, and 208 in the Fire Service and Civil Defence.

The adviser mentioned that the newly appointed personnel will begin their duties ahead of the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Elections, contributing to enhanced security and operational readiness.

Asked about the issue of mob justice, he acknowledged that incidents still occur, though efforts are underway to reduce these.

“There has been discussion on how to minimise incidents of mob justice. I won’t claim that it has been completely eradicated — it still happens. We are working to reduce this trend as much as possible,” he said.

Regarding disciplinary action within the police force, the adviser confirmed that 18 officers have been dismissed for prolonged absenteeism.

“This is an ongoing process. If an officer remains absent from duty for 60 days or more without approved leave, they face dismissal. This policy is in place and will continue,” he stated.

In response to another query, the adviser emphasised the importance of justice and due process.

“We want to ensure that no innocent or ordinary person is punished under any circumstances. At the same time, those who are guilty will not be spared. Justice must prevail in all cases,” he affirmed.
