At least 5 dead, including police officer, in Manhattan office shooting

A shooting incident at a high-rise office building in midtown Manhattan on Monday left at least five people dead, including an off-duty New York City police officer, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The suspected shooter has been identified as Shane Tamura from Nevada. Two individuals briefed on the investigation told the Associated Press that Tamura died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Identification found on his body included a concealed carry permit issued in Las Vegas, the sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Emergency personnel from the New York City Fire Department were dispatched to the Park Avenue building around 6:30 p.m. following reports of gunfire. The building, located in one of the busiest commercial areas of the city, is home to several major financial institutions and the National Football League’s offices.

Eyewitness Jessica Chen told ABC News that she was attending a presentation on the second floor when gunfire erupted from the floor below.

“We heard multiple shots go off in quick succession from the first floor,” she said. Chen said she and others took shelter in a conference room and used tables to barricade the door. “We were honestly really, really scared,” she added, noting she texted her parents to say she loved them.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that several people had been injured. In a video message posted on social media, he urged those still inside the building to remain in place as law enforcement officers conducted a floor-by-floor sweep. He also mentioned plans to visit the hospital to meet the families of the victims.

Television footage showed lines of office workers evacuating the building with their hands raised. Among the tenants in the building are investment firm Blackstone and the consulate general of Ireland.

Nearby, some financial sector workers were getting food when they heard the commotion and saw crowds running.

“It was like a crowd panic,” said Anna Smith, who rushed back into a neighboring office building with others. They remained inside for about two hours before receiving clearance to leave.

The shooting occurred in a heavily trafficked area of midtown Manhattan, just north of Grand Central Terminal and close to St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

City officials warned of road closures, traffic congestion, and delays to public transportation in the surrounding area following the incident.

Despite the tragedy, New York City remains on track through late July to record the fewest murders and shooting injuries in decades, according to official data.
