Rajkummar Rao, Wamiqa Gabbi's Bhool Chuk Maaf skips theatrical release, to premiere on OTT

The release strategy for Bhool Chuk Maaf, starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi, has changed.

Initially slated for a theatrical debut on May 9, the Karan Sharma-directed comedy-drama will now premiere directly on Prime Video on May 16.

The shift to digital release comes amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. On May 8, production house Maddock Films shared the update via Instagram.

Their official statement read: “Given the current circumstances and the increased nationwide security measures, Maddock Films and Amazon MGM Studios have decided to bring our family entertainer Bhool Chuk Maaf straight to your screens on May 16, exclusively on Prime Video, globally.”

The statement added, “Although we were excited to experience the film with you in cinemas, national interest takes priority. Jai Hind.”

Set in the colorful streets of Varanasi, the story follows Rajan (played by Rajkummar Rao), a hopeless romantic who lands a government job just to win over Titli (Wamiqa Gabbi), the woman he loves. But things take a twist when Rajan gets stuck in a time loop, waking up repeatedly on the day of his Haldi ceremony. What ensues is a comical and touching journey about love, fate, and fresh beginnings.

This film marks the first collaboration between Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi on screen.

At a press event, Rajkummar Rao spoke about his role, sharing that his connection to such characters is rooted in his own life experiences: “I’ve lived that life, I’ve seen people like them closely. There’s something very relatable about these roles.”

Most recently, Rajkummar Rao appeared in the 2024 hit Stree 2 with Shraddha Kapoor. Wamiqa Gabbi was last seen in Baby John, co-starring Varun Dhawan.
