3 death row inmates attempt jailbreak from Kashimpur prison

Three death row inmates at the Kashimpur High Security Central Jail in Gazipur attempted to escape by digging through the prison walls using improvised tools, according to prison authorities.

The inmates — Shahadat Hossain of Choubaria in Tangail Sadar, Roni Mahanta of Majina area of Joypurhat, and Nazrul Islam Majnu of Diadanga in Kurigram’s Bhurungamari — had collected various materials to facilitate their escape plan, authorities said.

All three are sentenced to death.

The jailbreak attempt was uncovered on the night of August 5, around 8:15 pm, when Assistant Chief Warden Mokhlesur Rahman, on duty, heard unusual noises coming from Room No. 12 on the ground floor of the Tamal building within the prison complex.

Following the incident, a thorough search was conducted the next morning (August 6), during which authorities recovered a cache of items from the room. These included an iron sheet, two metal rods, a 28-foot rope and a 25-foot belt—both made from blankets—two iron rings, a 10-foot-long pole, and various other paraphernalia.

Upon interrogation, the inmates admitted to stockpiling the materials in preparation for a possible escape, stating they were waiting for an opportunity.

On Thursday night, Jailer Asadur Rahman filed a case at Konabari Police Station regarding the attempted escape.

Md. Salahuddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Konabari Police Station, said the matter is under investigation. Legal action is being taken in accordance with the law.
