Two friends killed in Sitakunda road crash

Two friends, including a local Chhatra Dal leader, were killed in a road accident on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Sitakunda on Thursday night.

The accident occurred around 8:30 pm in front of Oxygen Road in Bhatiari Union when their motorcycle was struck by a Dhaka-bound oil tanker, police and local sources said.

The deceased were identified as Md Arif, 28, son of Md Manik, and Md Jewel, 29, son of the late Abul Kasem—both residents of Chairman Ghata in Madam Bibirhat, Jahanabad.

Arif served as the president of Ward No. 2 Chhatra Dal in Bhatiari Union, confirmed Upazila Sechchhasebak Dal member secretary Helal Uddin Babar.

According to witnesses, the two friends were attempting a U-turn when the tanker truck belonging to Muskan Vegetable Oil collided with their motorcycle, killing them on the spot.

Locals later recovered the bodies and handed them over to the families. The driver of the truck fled the scene, though the oil tanker was seized.

Abdul Mumin, OC of Baroawlia Highway Police Station, said police had seized the vehicles involved in the accident. “The victims’ families took the bodies before police arrived,” he added.
