Over 30 CU students injured in clash with locals; army deployed

Chattogram, Aug 31 (UNB)- Over 30 students of Chittagong University (CU) were injured in a clash with local people near the university's Gate No. 2 area early Sunday following an alleged incident of harassment of a female student.
Students said an argument ensued between a student of Philosophy Department and a guard of her rented house over opening the gate when she reached there slightly before midnight.
At one point, the guard called several others who then physically assaulted the student.
When other students gathered to protest the incident and tried to detain the guard a clash broke out between them and local people, leaving 32 students injured.
A platoon of the Bangladesh Army was deployed on the campus around 3:30am to bring the situation under control.
Of the injured, 12 were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
“I always return on time. Last night, I came back before 12 am and asked the guard to open the door. He refused and began verbally abusing me. When I protested, he slapped me. My roommates rushed out but he pushed me to the ground and kicked me,” the victim told reporters.
CU Proctor Tanvir Mohammad Haider said he informed both the security personnel and police.
