Bangladesh Women's Football Team on verge of history

Bangladesh women's football is a team on the verge of history as they crossed the Myanmar hurdle beating the hosts by 2-1 goals in their second group match of the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026 qualifiers held at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon today (Wednesday).

With this win, Bangladesh topped of the group C with two successive wins and it is most likely a matter of time for Bangladesh to become group champions.

If Bangladesh is able to win against lowest ranked Turkmenistan in their last group match, history will be made in women's football. For the first time, Bangladesh will play in the final round of the AFC Asian Cup, Asia's biggest women's football competition.

The eight group winners of the Women's Asian Cup qualifiers will play in the final round which will be held next year in Australia.

The last group match against Turkmenistan will be held on Saturday (July 5) at the same venue.

Bangladesh, who had lost all five matches in the previous two Asian Cup qualifiers, have now won two consecutive matches and are ahead of others in the race to secure a ticket to the Asian Cup final round.

Forward Ritu Porna Chakma, the architect of Bangladesh's victory, struck twice in the match while substitute midfielder Win Win netted a lone goal for Myanmar.

The early breakthrough came for Bangladesh in the 18th minute from a free kick. Ritu gave Bangladesh a deserving lead with a powerful angular shot from the top of the box after the ball came her way rebounded by her own free kick, which beat Myanmar defense entirely and finally the goalkeeper.

After the resumption, Myanmar who are 73 places above than Bangladesh in FIFA ranking, desperately tried to fight back in the match, but the wonderful girl Ritu Porna struck the final blow in the 71st minute with a left-footed shot from the left wing of the box, giving her side a clear 2-0 lead.

Bangladesh, however, could not increase the lead further, but Myanmar reduced the margin as substitute midfielder Win Win scored a lone goal in the 89th minute to make the score line 2-1.
