Eviction drive to free Shyamasundari canal from encroachment begins
The district administration started an eviction drive today to free the traditional Shyamasundari canal in Rangpur city from encroachment.
The drive, led by Mahmud Hasan Mridha, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Rangpur district administration began this morning and continued till this afternoon.
On the first day, various types of illegal structures were evicted including demarcation of the Shyamasundari canal adjacent to the city's sub-registry office.
The Rangpur Metropolitan Police and organizers of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement were present at the time.
Talking to reporters during the drive, the Senior Assistant Commissioner said that both banks of the canal are closed due to illegal structures. Therefore, 117 illegal encroachers are being identified primarily and their structures are being evicted.
“Then, with the joint initiative of the divisional and district administrations and Rangpur City Corporation, we will inspect both banks of the canal and take measures to prevent encroachment and pollution of the Shyamasundari canal,” he added.
